about

“Strangers’” – Single of the Year
The Vinyl District

The Rebel Light seem to imbue the light side of Los Angeles. A band in thrall to golden guitar pop, their psych-edged material recalls (early) Shins or even British group Temples.
Byrds-style guitar riffs are set against gilded harmonies, with The Rebel Light adding that vital sense of edge.
Clash Magazine UK

"If you're craving for a band with a bit of pop zest, look no further than The Rebel Light.
The sea breezes of their home town, Los Angeles, have helped them imbue their psychedelic surf sounds with a melodic sensibility:
New single 'Strangers' sounds like the Beach Boys colliding with The Doors to create something that is very 2015"
NME

The blissful, sunshiny pop of The Rebel Light’s “Strangers” just wasn’t made for these wintry times, but it’s never too cold for some good old-fashioned California dreamin’. In a breezy three and a half minutes, guitars that echo the understated power of Grizzly Bear and the off-kilter rhythms of The Shins collide with dusky, '60s style harmonies. For relative newcomers that record in a basement home studio, the sound is remarkably polished, and each element is knitted together tightly. Perhaps that’s a reflection of the trio’s makeup: two brothers and a cousin.
The Line of Best Fit

Now with their brand new single ‘Strangers’ about to land The Rebel Light may just be about to achieve their destiny. The song is a delightful pastiche of half forgotten musical styles, ranging from the dizzying late ’60s sunshine pop of The 5th Dimension through the classic white pop-soul of Todd Rundgren‘s 1972 opus Something Anything to the more recent, and occasionally beautiful lo-fi take on psychedelic popular music that is fellow Southern Californian Ariel Pink‘s Before Today.Born of a myriad of influences and with the warmth of a Californian sun beating down on its back, ‘Strangers’ is a nigh on perfect way to look ahead to summer.
God Is In The TV Zine

A proper slice of indie pop perfection, that echoes genre greats, The Shins. Heavily influenced by the better days (or so the old man tells me) back in the ’60s, if there was ever a band to completely radiate their hazy Californian surroundings it’s these guys. The warm vocals, big choruses & shimmering guitars melodies just ooze sunshine.
Your Hands Music

The Rebel Light appear to have a knack for writing a catchy pop hook, with the chorus and harmonies guaranteed to be stuck in your head for days;  yet, whilst drawing on such sixties influences, they still manage to sound distinctly modern. Indeed, the band’s retro sound seems to hark back to the days of that old West Coast dream of sunshine, surfing, tans and white teeth, to the point where the song feels like it should be the soundtrack to the latest ad for Californian holidays. But ‘Strangers’ also includes some psychedelic flavours, with the wall of guitars providing a platform for the dreamy vocals to play across – further proof that this band’s heart and soul is in sunny indie pop.  Gig Slutz

lyrics

I catch your eyes
Trying not to notice me
I know your moves
As you float across the crowded room

C1

You could be my love
Standing in the light
Waving to the people to save our life
I remember when she would always say
Its better to be strangers than live this way

V2

I like your look
The pretty California smile
I think of you
In the perfect summer sun dress
I've seen your face
In my head a million times a day
Its like a drug
Shooting through all of my veins

C2

You could be my love
Standing in the light
Waving to the people to save our life
I remember when she would always say
Its better to be strangers than live this way

You could be my love
Standing in the light
Waving to the people to save our life
I remember when she would always say
Its better to be strangers than live this way

I still remember when
We would always say
Strangers make the best of friends

C3

You could be my love
Standing in the light
Waving to the people to save our life
I remember when she would always say
Its better to be strangers than live this way
